Sick of your cubical? Dreaming of the Boundary Waters Again? It is tough to make a living without working hard but there comes a time when you need to take a break from making a living and actually live. Many call these breaks ‘Vacations’. While there are vacation spots all over the world, one popular destination for those with the love of the wild is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Leave the traffic behind and swap out your neighbors for the call of a loon, beavers passing by, and bald eagles soaring just above you. You don’t have to be an expert; you just have to want it bad enough. Contact our BWCA for Outfitting Services and Guides in the BWCA.

Staying Safe in the BWCA
Can’t have the thrill of adventure without at least a little risk. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is traveled by many but has not been developed, therefore there are certain safety precautions to take when entering the BWCA. Below are some circumstances to be mindful of and have a plan for when taking nature on her own terms:
- H2O – You are up to 60% water, so staying hydrated is important. The beautiful lakes of the Boundary Waters may look inviting to drink. Don’t. Not unless you boil or purify your water first! There is a common organism that is known to cause intestinal track issues. Diarrhea leads to dehydration. That one drink could derail your entire trip.
- Storm Safety – With the towering pines and vast connections of water, storms can get pretty intense at times in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. If you see the weather turning and start experiencing a lot of lightening get low to the ground. Stay away from water, wet rocks, peaks and other tall areas that attract lightening strikes. If you feel tingly, crouch down, put your weight on the balls of your feet and put your head between your legs. Try to touch the ground as little as possible.
- First Ad – It is important to dress a fresh wound quickly and properly out in the BWCA. An infection can set in quickly and with miles to go, even a little cut could turn the tides on your adventure. Be sure to bring a well-stocked, first aid kit and having someone who knows first aid or at least isn’t squeamish with blood in your group. If injuries are severe enough a message needs to get outside of the Boundary Waters, there are numbers painted on the latrine of most campsites, write your location and injuries down and send a part of your group or other groups out for help.
