Signs of Spring: Kites on the Ice

Three people flying kites on a frozen lake under a bright blue sky with billowy clouds in Ely, MN – a favorite early spring tradition before the resort season begins in Ely MN.

March has always been the perfect time for one of our favorite traditions—flying kites on the frozen lake. When our kids were younger, we’d take advantage of the wide-open space and crisp, late-winter air to run across the ice, letting bright-colored kites soar against the deep blue sky. It’s one of those magical in-between-season moments, where winter still lingers, but spring is just around the corner.

Spring is in the air—well, almost! As March winds down, the lakes around Ely, MN, are still frozen, and patches of snow remain on the ground. But with opening day on May 10 fast approaching, we’re already gearing up for another incredible season at Moose Track Adventures Resort, our small, family-owned Ely, MN resort.

Getting the Cabins Ready

Once the ice begins to melt and the temperatures rise, we’ll be busy preparing our Ely, MN cabins for the first guests of the season. This means deep cleaning, rolling docks ini, stocking supplies, and ensuring everything is in top shape for your arrival. Whether you’re planning a fishing trip, a paddling adventure, or just a relaxing getaway, our cozy cabins offer the perfect escape.

Ice-Out Predictions & Spring in Ely

One of the biggest questions this time of year is: When will the ice go out? Ice-out in Ely, MN, varies each year, but it typically happens in late April or early May. As soon as the lakes open up, the Boundary Waters and surrounding areas come alive with wildlife, rushing waterfalls, and fresh spring air—making it an amazing time to visit.

Why Visit in Early Season?

May and early June are often overlooked but offer some of the best experiences:

  • Fewer crowds – Enjoy the peace and quiet of a small resort setting before peak season.
  • Great fishing – Walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass are active as the waters warm up.
  • Wildlife sightings – Loons, moose, and even the occasional bear can be spotted in spring!
