Bordering Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park, the BWCAW is a vast wilderness in northeastern Minnesota. It began in 1964 when the US Congress designated this unique border region as a protected, natural wilderness. The park covers more than 800,000 acres and is managed by the US Forest Service. Visitors can enjoy the 1,200 miles of canoe routes, almost 2,200 campsites and nearly 20 hiking trails through the Superior National Forest. Ancient Glaciers carved out the unique features of the BWCAW including approximately 1,175 lakes. Streams and lakes combine to cover about 190,000 acres of wetland. The remaining 80% of the BWCAW is made up of forests, islands, cliffs, canyons, rocky shoreline and sandy beaches. There are around 80 different entry points where visitors can begin their wilderness journey.
